TreadSafe Anti-Slip Stair Nosings
Pre-cast concrete stairs in a civic development
The Challenge
The Corby Cube, a £50 million 21st-century civic development, combines council administration, commercial facilities, and cultural spaces including offices, a theatre, library, council chamber, and marriage room. Designed by HawkinsBrown, the building has received international recognition, including runner-up at the 2007 LEAF Awards for Best Public Building Design of the Year.
With eight levels—including two below ground—the building required a durable, high-performance anti-slip solution to protect users across all staircases, including fire escapes and general access areas.
The Solution
Porcher Abrasive Coatings supplied TreadSafe abrasive-coated stainless steel stair nosings with high-visibility yellow paint, ensuring compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and enhancing pedestrian safety.
The Outcome
- Durable Anti-Slip Surface: Withstands heavy foot traffic in public and emergency access areas.
- High-Visibility Safety: Yellow nosings improve awareness and accessibility for visually impaired users.
- Rugged Design: Suitable for pre-cast concrete stairs, fire escapes, and high-traffic civic environments.
- DDA Compliance: Supports safe access for all visitors, meeting regulatory requirements.
Conclusion
- The TreadSafe stair nosings have provided a permanent, reliable anti-slip solution throughout the Corby Cube. Their robust construction ensures long-term performance and contributes to the safe, inclusive environment of this award-winning civic building. Galliford Try, the main contractor, confirmed that the Corby Cube, valued at £27.1 million, would be completed and open to the public by November 2010.
